About Ethel Hardisty Ward
Ethel Hardisty Holmes, only child of Sydney Johnson Holmes and his wife Catherine, formerly Hardisty, was born at Leeds Maternity Hospital on 19 Mar 1913, and baptized at Fewston Parish Church.
From 1915 the family lived at Highgarth, Thorner, near Leeds. When Ethel was 5 she caught diptheria. She attended Miss Barton's Private School from Jan 1919 until Dec 1920 when they returned to live in Leeds. Their new home was 43 Sandhurst Grove, Leeds until 1926 or 1927, then they bought a house at 29 Dib Lane, Roundhay, Leeds (later renumbered as 39 Dib Lane).
From the time of their return to Leeds until 1930 Ethel attended Chapel Allerton High School for Girls. Her father expected her to go on to university, but she refused and stayed at home to care for her mother, who had rheumatoid arthritis, and keep house.
On her eighteenth birthday she left home and began nursing training at the Bradford Royal Infirmary, Westgate, Bradford, under the matron, Miss Davies. She qualified as an S.R.N. in April or May 1934, and returned to her parents, now at 5 Marlborough Gardens, Leeds, until October when she took up a scholarship to do midwifery training at Leeds Maternity Hospital.
Having contracted quinsey, necessitating a tonsillectomy, she missed the exam in April and did not qualify as a midwife until June 1935. She remained on the staff of the Maternity Hospital as acting sister until Oct 1936.
From the first of that month until 30 Sep 1937 she was training as a Health Visitor in Leeds, supported by a bursarship. On completion of her training she obtained employment as a Health Visitor in Heckmondwike, and worked there from 1 Oct 1937 until early 1941.
Princess Mary's R.A.F. Nursing Service accepted her as a nursing sister in early 1941 and she served with them until the end of 1945.
On Oct 18th, 1945, at St Mary's Roman Catholic Church, East Parade, Bradford, she married Basil Ward (http://restinplace.com/grave.php?gid=9), a male nurse, and shortly afterwards left the R.A.F. They rented a flat at 35 Avenue Crescent, Harehills, Leeds, from Mrs Bieber, and moved in on 11 Sep 1946.
On 24 Nov Ethel started work at the Ministry of Pensions Hospital, Harehills, but left three months later (28 Feb 1947) in a protest over poor pay for long-service staff there. She returned to working as a Health Visitor for Leeds Public Health Department on 10 Mar 1947.
There was an acute housing shortage at this time and on 8 May 1947 they moved into a modern semi at 29 St Martin's View, Chapel Allerton, Leeds, which they shared with the widowed owner, Mrs Alf Mattison, whose husband had been an activist in the Labour Party.
Ethel then found them accommodation with Mr Clark of 8 Albion Terrace, Clifford, in return for her keeping house for him. They moved in there on 26 Jun 1948.
On 3 Aug 1948 Basil and Ethel's first child, Catherine Barbara Frances, was born at Leeds Maternity Hospital. Her father, Basil, described as a male charge nurse, registered the birth on 9 Aug 1948.
Early in 1949, Mr Clark died and the family moved to rented accomodation at 'Tadmor', High Street, Boston Spa, on 18 Apr 1949.
On 9 Aug 1950 they bought a house at 39 Blamires Street, Great Horton, Bradford, and it was here that their second child, Anthony James, was born on 22 Sep 1950.
In Mar 1957 Ethel returned to Health Visiting, on a part-time basis, in the Bradford area. The family moved to 792 Great Horton Road, Bradford, in Jul 1960.
On 22 Jul 1963 Basil died.
Ethel moved to a newly-built house at 34 Bartle Lane, Great Horton, on 4 Jul 1966. By 1977 both her children had left home and in July of that year she went to live in a small cottage at 63 Hollybank Road, Great Horton.
At St John's Church, Great Horton, on 12 Jan 1980, Ethel married John Leslie Arthur Radcliffe, a widower with two married daughters.
Ethel suffered two strokes, in Sep 1984 and Mar 1986, which left her blind in one eye and with failing sight in the other. A further series of strokes ended her life on 29 Nov 1987 at Bradford Royal Infirmary. She was cremated and her ashes scattered in Lawnswood Cemetery, Leeds.
This headstone was created by Ethel Hardisty Ward's Grandson, adultsm. |
